Your Gourmet Supermarket Is Probably Gross

22011wholefoods.jpg
"Preparing the meat"at the Whole Foods in Union Square

Just because you're paying $20 for organic Alaskan salmon from your upscale local grocery doesn't mean it's any cleaner than the frozen chunk of fish that's been sitting at D'Agostino's for days: state inspectors gavefailing gradesto 151 supermarkets and gourmet specialty shops in Manhattan during their most recent 2010 state inspections. Blast, we just broke ourthird monocle this week!

Among the worst offenders was the Whole Foods in Columbus Circle, which had 31 problems last year, including wastewater that was allegedly backing up into the meat area and olives mixing around the olive bar (oh my heavens!). Inspectors destroyed 44 pounds of ground beef after finding it was contaminated with turkey meat; the store also failed its re-inspection earlier this month, and was fine $1,200. Last fall, a tipstersent usthe above photo from the Whole Foods at Union Square, noting that the prepared foods (cooked, prepared turkey breasts) were being carted upstairs alongside filthy garbage cans and employees with dirty dustbins. Another tipstersent us photosof workers from Agata&Valentina dropping their gourmet fish on the sidewalk for several minutes.

Other upscale supermarkets who were given violations include the East Village Barnyard Cheese Shop, whose nine problems included having only scalding hot water in the bathroom; Chelsea Market grocery BuonItalia, which had 13 problems that included a cracked door to the caviar case and three pounds of anchovies that inspectors tossed; and Hudson Yards deli The Hamptons Market Place, which had 12 problems that included an improperly designed gelato dispenser.

A Second 2nd Avenue Deli Is Nearly Ready

201102_secondave.jpg
Inside the current 2nd Avenue Deli (Tien Mao/Gothamist)
Two years ago we first heardrumorsof a second 2nd Avenue Deli coming to the Upper East Side, and today a call not only confirms that the kosher spot's second location is almost ready (it'll debut around Passover in late April) but that once again the beloved deli's name will be a misnomer: the Upper East Side's new pastrami king will be at 1442 First Avenue at 75th Street (the Deli's current incarnation is on 33rd Street off Third Avenue).

The original 2nd Avenue Deli, which was on Second Avenue and 10th street, closed in 2006 aftera rent dispute. Meanwhile, police are still searching for the men who killed Abe Lebewohl, the Deli's founder, who was murdered in cold blood in 1996. There is a $130,000 reward for information. Last September police reportedly narrowed down theirlist of suspects.

World Bank: Food Is Getting Really Expensive

022111produce.jpg
Flickr userpondblue
A few weeks ago our local deli jacked the price of a small coffee to $1.25, and though we were furious at the time and vowed never to return, we understand where they're coming from now. The prices of cotton, wheat and most other commodities are on the riseaccording to the World Bank. Combine that with New York rents and massive unemployment and you have a"perfect storm,"says Joel Bergof the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. One Inwood resident said,"I will stop buying products when they get too expensive. It's getting too expensive to live in New York City. This place is for the rich."

Across the USfood prices rose 1.5%last year, with the average price of bread jumping to $1.88 a pound and the index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs rising by 5.5%. Global wheat prices also rose 73% from June to January, and the world food price index is just 3% below the peak of 2008. World Bank Group PresidentRobert B. Zoellick said,“The price hike is already pushing millions of people into poverty, and putting stress on the most vulnerable, who spend more than half of their income on food."

As it isone in five New Yorkersis on food stamps, and unemployment isat around 9.6%. And even if you're gainfully employed, life is tough; on Flushing resident noted,"My salary was not raised, but my MetroCard went up. If the service was better, I wouldn't mind."

Shamrock Shake at the Rainbow's End Is Packed With Calories

022111shamrock.jpg
Chelsey M.
When we discovered that NYC's longShamrock Shake drought had finally ended, and sweet drops of nourishing green diglyceride were once again showering down upon our fair city, we were happier than a leprechaun gettingWarwick Davis's autograph. But then a reader had to McHarsh the Vibewich and send us this photo of the shake's calorie. It would seem that the minty delicious holiday beverage is not specifically too nutritious.

According tothe McDonald's website says, the 12 ounce version weighs in at just 420 (dude!) calories. Our tipster tells us the sign at the this Times Square McDonald's puts the 16 ouncer at 680 calories. At least McDonald's decided to just embrace themandatory calorie info disclosurewith a large font and a big circle around it, as if to say,"ONLY 680 calories!"And if you think about it, that's fewer calories than a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese (740) and even fewer calories than their fancy Angus Mushroom&Swiss (770).

All of McDonald's calorie information can be foundon their website, but you have to download a pdf to peruse it. Alternatively, you could just enjoy yourself and buy yourself some extra pairs of green pants with elastic waistbands.

Where to Observe National Margarita Day

Today is National Margarita Day, which is not an official holiday but it is observed by literally hundreds of food publicists nationwide. (Ironically, today is alsoGlobal World Thinking Day, but we haven't gotten any press releases about that, so whatever.) No doubt you've already finished all your Margarita Day shopping and are getting ready to kick back and celebrate that immortal day in 1934 when a Mexico City barman named"Willie"may have concocted the first Margarita.

Yes, it's a made-up holiday based on a probably apocryphal story, but aren't they all? We hardly need an excuse to drink margaritas, so click through on the photos for a few places offering specials tonight. Plus cupcakes!
